FDA defends BPA

The Food and Drug Administration has defended the use of BPA in plastics including water bottles and baby bottles. According to an associated press story, a study released Tuesday by the Journal of the American Medical Association suggested a new concern about BPA. Because of the possible public health implications, the results “deserve scientific follow-up,” the study authors said. Using a health survey of nearly 1,500 adults, they found that those exposed to higher amounts of BPA were more likely to report having heart disease and diabetes.

“Right now, our tentative conclusion is that it’s safe, so we’re not recommending any change in habits,” said Laura Tarantino, head of the FDA’s office of food additive safety. But she acknowledged, “there are a number of things people can do to lower their exposure.”

According to the FDA they found no strong evidence of health hazards from BPA, but said there was “some concern” about possible effects on the brain in fetuses, infants and children.

As a parent I have a problem with the government agencies acknowledging that there is "some concern" for infants and children, yet they don't suggest doing anything different. The contridiction of the FDA saying the results of the latest test "deserve scientific follow-up" but in the same report they say "our tentative conclusion is that it's safe".

Who are these individuals making decisions that affect me and my family. Who do they truly represent. The Canadian Government has proposed banning the sale of baby bottles that contain BPA. What is wrong with America? We need to be proactive when it comes to the safety of our children. If the FDA can identify 'some concern' we need to stop using the chemical in water bottles and baby bottles. You can bet it's Klean Kanteen's and Sigg Bottles in my home.

When it comes to the Health and Safety of your children please don't leave it up to the government agencies. Do the research and protect your children.
