The AP is reporting that one infant has died and another is hospitalized in New Mexico. The rare illness is tied to Powdered Baby Formula. The babies had a bacteria known as Enterobacter sakazakii. This bacteria can cause meningitis, bloodstream infections or a deadly intestinal inflammation in infants. The Center for Disease Control has not stated that the formula is the cause of the illness, it is possible that the babies in question got this bacteria from other sources. However, the powdered baby formula appears to be the source.
Be sure to keep your baby safe. In my opinion there is no substitution for breast milk. Don't depend on huge corporations to make your babies first food if you are able to produce it yourself.
