Another exciting announcement for green energy in Colorado. An anaerobic digester will be installed by Microgy in the Fort St. Vrain power plant. This will produce 125,000 megawatt-hours which is enough to power 17,000 homes annually. The energy will be purchased by Xcel Energy, Colorado's largest energy provider. This is a great step forward for Xcel Energy who is under pressure to meet requirements of 20% of its energy being from renewable sources before 2020.
There is some interesting history at the Fort St. Vrain Power Facility. It was originally opened in 1979 and operated for 10 years as a nuclear power plant. It was shut down in 1989 and decommissioned as a nuclear plant. In 1996 it was reopened as a natural gas burning facility. This facility is coming full circle with the addition of a cow manure digester.
I love seeing new was to create renewable energy, especially here in Colorado. This is a great plan and I am glad to see Xcel jump on board to make it possible.

Lightning Hyrids Reveals Prototype

Loveland Colorado based Lightning Hybrids will unveil a new hybrid technology vehicle today at the Denver auto show. Lightning Hybrids is an automotive research and manufacturing company that has designed two 100 Mile per gallon hydraulic diesel hybrid cars. The two prototypes not only get 100 MPG but they also will go 0-60 MPH in 5.9 seconds. The cars are expected to be available for sale in 2010 and will sell for $39,000 to $59,000.
The Denver Auto Show runs April 1-5 2009 at the Colorado Convention Center. Be sure to check out this exciting new Green Vehicle. It is very exciting to see a small company based here in Northern Colorado coming out with such great technology. I am so happy someone is finally trying to manufacture smart vehicles while the major auto makers (GM, Ford, Chrysler) fall further and further behind.

Earth Hour 2009
This weekend people across the country and across the world will hit the switch to show support for our Environment. Earth Hour 2009 is scheduled for March 28th from 8:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. local time. The idea behind Earth Hour is to turn off all of your electric lights for one hour to make a statement about energy use and climate change.
This is a great opportunity to build awareness of how our energy use is effecting the world around us. It is important for people and businesses to be aware of the green house gas emissions. By turning off non-essential lighting a family can save money on their electric bills. Your family can begin to make a difference by reducing its energy consumption. With Millions of us around the world working together we can make a difference.
This weekend is an easy opportunity to get started. Don't just turn off the lights in your home. Ask a neighbor to do the same or encourage the entire neighborhood to participate.
