New Food Label Laws

A new food label law goes into affect this week which will require the label to state the country of origen of the food. It has taken years to get this law passed but finally the consumer will be notified where the food is coming from.

This is very timely following the current news of tainted milk in China, salmonella infected peppers from Mexico earlier this year, and even the spinach scare of the previous year. This will allow for quicker identification of tainted foods and quicker recall ability.

This is a great new label. I believe it is important to know where your found is coming from. However, the loop holes are enormous. These labels apply only to fresh foods. Processed foods do not have the same requirement.

For example, fresh strawberries need a label but chocolate covered strawberries do not. Fresh raw peanuts need a label but honey roasted peanuts do not. Fresh Hamburger meat needs a label but bacon does not. I guess this is just one more reason not to eat processed foods.

Finally, some good news for consumers.
